Dr. Betty Shabazz Computer Lab Opening in Brooklyn

Alpha Upsilon Joins the Opening of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Computer Lab in Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY – On October 23rd 2010, member’s of Alpha Upsilon Chapter, “BrooklynOmega”, www.brooklynomega.org, continued its Assault On Illiteracy by joining forces with the tenant association of the Soror Dr. Betty Shabazz housing located in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn to open a newly refurbished computer lab. Bro Robert Cornegy as Democratic district leader was instrumental in gathering financial and political support to make this important facility a reality.

Alpha Upsilon was joined by Soror and Assembly women Annette Robinson along with various civic organizations and the Building’s Tenant association executives. The computer lab will provide GED certification, Job Placement aid and Microsoft certification (valued at $1200) all free of cost. The center has state of the art infrastructure and is the only center in the area offering what it does.

The Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn is noted for only 16.4% of its African American population over 25 years of age holding degrees and the median household for a family of four is just $35,000 per year, these stats are based on 2009 data. We at Alpha Upsilon hope to increase the percentage and the dollar amounts presented here by supporting such facilities.
